Fire Prevention Week is October 3 to 9, 2021!

This year Fire Prevention Week focuses on  “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” Knowing what to do when an alarm sounds will keep you and your family safe. When an alarm makes noises – a beeping sound or a chirping sound – you must take action!

Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety

Fire Prevention Week 2021 - Beep means get on your feet

This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety!” works to about the different sounds the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make, and what those sounds mean.

Tips on the sounds of fire Safety

  • Hear a BEEP?
There’s an emergency! Get everyone out of the home immediately. Call 9-1-1 from outside.
  • Hear a CHIRP?
A single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds means the batteries, or the alarms themselves, need to be replaced immediately.
  • Get LOUD!
Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms today and every month.
  • Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms!
Install working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every storey of your home and outside sleeping areas. Test them every month!
  • Nothing lasts forever - including smoke alarms!
Smoke alarms don't last forever. Replace them after 10 years.
  • Fire doesn't take a vacation
Install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in cottages, cabins and trailers.

Did you know?

If you can’t hear your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, there are devices such as strobe lights or bed shakers that help alert you in an emergency. Contact Middlesex Centre Fire Services for information.

Chalk One Up for Fire Safety!

Chalks ready, set, draw! We’re challenging classes in Middlesex Centre to share fire safety messages, with a chance to win big!

  • Step 1: Enter your class to participate in our Chalk it Up for Fire Safety Challenge by emailing firehq@middlesexcentre.on.ca. Multiple classes may enter per school.
  • Step 2: Once we receive your email we will deliver a Chalk it Up kit for your classroom. These kits contain all you need to participate…sidewalk chalk & fire safety materials.
  • Step 3: Get your class familiar with fire safety by reviewing the materials in the kit and on this webpage.
  • Step 4: Have your students share their fire safety knowledge by using sidewalk chalk to draw fire safety messages on your sidewalks, tarmac, etc. (Make sure to pick a safe spot!)
  • Step 5: Post pictures of your Chalk it Up fire safety messages to your school’s social media accounts. Don’t forget to add the hashtags #MiddlesexCentre #Chalkoneupforfiresafety
  • Step 6: Enter your class into the draw by emailing pictures of your fire safety messages to firehq@middlesexcentre.on.ca. Entries received by Oct. 19, 2021 will be included in the random draw on Oct. 22. The teacher of the winning class will receive a $100 gift card for classroom supplies.
