MIDDLESEX COUNTY PARTNERS WITH VOYAGO TO REDUCE TRANSPORTATION BARRIERS TO VACCINE CLINICS AND MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS
May 21, 2021
Beginning Tuesday May 25, Middlesex County, in partnership with Voyago, will begin operating a free shuttle service to help ensure vulnerable and low-income residents can access COVID-19 vaccinations and other medical appointments. By removing barriers to transportation and making it easier to travel to clinics and medical offices, the County aims to create an equitable plan to ensure the health and safety of all community members.
Through funding provided by the Province of Ontario’s Social Service Relief Fund (SSRF), this shuttle service is intended for Middlesex County residents who have limited transportation options, who face barriers to accessible transportation, and who cannot afford transportation to vaccination appointments, medical clinics, or hospitals.
“We are so pleased that this partnership will increase access for eligible Middlesex County community members to the vaccination clinics and medical appointments” shares Cathy Burghardt-Jesson, Warden of Middlesex County. “This service will help support and protect the health of our most vulnerable populations.”
Starting May 25, residents will be able to ride on a Voyago shuttle van on a first-come, first-served basis. The curb to curb service will operate Monday through Sunday between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm. Trips must be pre-booked and only residents of Middlesex County who have a vaccine or other medical appointment can use the service for the purpose of travelling to and returning from their appointment. Round-trip pick up and drop off from any Middlesex County address will be accommodated free of charge.
“At Middlesex County, we are committed to assisting our community members that face barriers to transportation. To make this possible, we continue to build on partnerships, like the existing collaboration with Voyago, to deliver accessible and reliable transportation. This new shuttle service is a great example of working together to help our community and remove barriers to accessing vaccines or other medically necessary appointments”, said Cindy Howard, General Manager of Finance and Community Services at Middlesex County.
This temporary service will operate over the next few months as the Middlesex-London region ramps up capacity at the multiple vaccination clinics across the community.
The transit service operator, Voyago, has implemented additional measures to ensure the health and safety of passengers and employees in response to COVID-19. Riders can expect multiple safety measures during their trip including frequent cleaning of the van between passengers and contactless pick up and drop off. Masks or other face coverings are mandatory on the shuttle at all times.
Middlesex County would like to thank all of our community members who are helping their family members, friends, and neighbours with booking their vaccination and medical appointments and providing a ride to their appointments, where possible. The shuttle service will help ensure the limited community resources are available to those who need it most.
