The new Youth Advisory Committee is for young people ages 13 to 19 who want to make a positive difference in Middlesex Centre.  We are looking for volunteers to join the committee.

What is the Youth Advisory Committee?

The Youth Advisory Committee (“YAC”) will advise Council on important social, recreational, and lifestyle issues concerning the municipality’s younger population.

Committee members will:

  • Be a voice for local youth
  • Get involved with community events
  • Plan events and programs for local youth
  • Attend committee meetings
  • Work as a team

Who is on the Committee?

The committee is made up of young people who are between 13 to 19 years of age who live, work, study, or play in the Municipality of Middlesex Centre. One municipal councillor will act as the co-chair, and the committee will be supported by municipal staff.

Committee members should:

  • be fair and open-minded
  • be able to consider a broad range of views that reflect the diversity of the community
  • have a good understanding of the local issues that are relevant to young people
  • be willing to talk with other young people to get their thoughts and ideas

When does the Committee meet?

Meetings will be held at quarterly (every three months) or more often as needed and the committee members agree. The dates and times for the meetings will be set by the committee each year. It is expected that meetings will be after school or in the evenings, and there may be an option to attend online.

Why be on the Youth Advisory Committee?

If you are interested in making Middlesex Centre a better place for young people, than this committee is for you!  As a committee member, you will:

  • meet new people
  • share your ideas for projects and programs with decision makers on Council
  • support your community
  • build your resume
  • get your required high school volunteer hours
  • earn a great reference
  • have fun!

How to get Involved

Getting involved is simple. The first thing step is to complete and submit the one-page application form:

YAC Application Form

We are looking to receive applications by April 15, 2021.

Once complete, email the form back to Scott Mairs, Director of Community Services at Middlesex Centre. If you want to submit a paper copy, you can drop off your completed forms at the main desk at the Komoka Wellness Centre or in the drop box at the municipal office.

Once we've received your application, we'll review it and then get back to you about your involvement. This may take a few weeks as the timeline will depend when you apply, and if there are positions open at the time.

Depending on your age, you may be required to do a police record check or have your parent/guardian complete a consent form.

As a committee member, you will be trained on Middlesex Centre's Respect in the Workplace and R Zone policies. You'll also need to take accessibility training, as a required by the province.

We look forward to having you as a committee volunteer!
