As we start to re-open, businesses across Ontario are having to rethink their spaces to address physical distancing and other responses to COVID-19.

If you are directing the flow of customers through your establishment, rearranging office furniture, or making any change to the physical space in your business, Middlesex Centre Fire Services would like to remind you to keep fire safety top of mind.

Your new space needs to conform to all of the existing requirements for safe emergency exit under the Ontario Fire Code. In general, make sure:

  • Fire alarm systems, portable extinguishers and exit signs are inspected and tested as required;
  • Aisles, hallways, exits and stairwells are clear of obstructions;
  • Where applicable, aisles widths are adequate to ensure safe distancing and safe exiting can be accomplished; and,
  • Exit doors are unlocked and accessible from inside the building.

If you have any questions about how the Fire Code requirements apply to your business or want to check that your new space is “fire safe,” please contact Middlesex Centre Fire Services.
