Mayor DeViet becomes County Warden

In his county update, Deputy Mayor Brennan highlighted Mayor DeViet’s election to the position of Warden for Middlesex County at the November 28th Inaugural Council meeting. Mayor DeViet will serve as Warden for the 2023-24 term. As Head of County Council, Warden DeViet will chair Council meetings, represent the County at official functions, act as the County’s spokesperson and much more. This is in addition to her continuing role as Mayor of Middlesex Centre.

Presentations

  • Tracy Annett, Upper Thames River Conservation Authority’s General Manager, provided a summary of the UTRCA’s 2024 draft budget. 
  • Eric Joudrey, Manager of Environmental Services, provided a presentation regarding the Middlesex Centre Drinking Water System. As part of this presentation, Eric detailed the extensive quality and control measures in place to ensure safe operation of the drink water system. The internal and external audits conducted on the Drinking Water Quality Management System identified no issues of non-compliance.
    Council also received the annual inspections for the Middlesex Centre, Birr, and Melrose drinking water systems. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) annually inspects municipal drinking water systems. Inspections cover operational and process details as well as the system condition and maintenance practices. 

Glendon Drive Roundabout & Coldstream Road Realignment

On behalf of Stantec, Isaac Bartlett gave an update on the Glendon Drive roundabout and the Coldstream Road realignment projects. Isaac was joined by Chris Traini, Engineer for the County of Middlesex. The project has been in the works since 2015 and construction is anticipated to begin  in Spring of 2024.

In Brief

During the meeting, Council also: 

  • Received a report on the Globe and Mail’s Top 100 Livable Cities in Canada, which includes Middlesex Centre at ranking 89.
  • Approved a new Volunteer Policy. The municipality is fortunate to have volunteers looking to assist with municipal program delivery and this policy will support these opportunities. 
  • Received an overview of Middlesex Centre’s Winter Maintenance Plan
  • Awarded Watson & Associates Economists Ltd. with the contract to complete the 2024 Development Charge Study.
  • Awarded the construction of the Proskairos Municipal Drain to Cassidy Construction London Ltd. 
  • Approved a resolution of support for the Long-Term Reliability Project being undertaken by Stanton Green Energy Inc.
  • Approved a motion of support for Enbridge Gas’s natural gas expansion program.
  • Met in closed session to discuss matters related to a potential property disposition in Ward 2 and a litigation update in Ward 4. For questions related to closed session items, please contact the Municipal Clerk.

Next Council Meeting

The next meeting of Middlesex Centre Council is set for Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. This special meeting will feature presentations regarding the Transportation and Servicing Master Plans. Please note that council meetings will be held at the Ilderton Community Centre for the duration of the municipal office renovation.
